Blog Tips: Obvious Things that Bloggers Forget to Do
So, I’ve been doing blogger outreach for brands for about three years now, so therefore spend a lot of time browsing a variety of blogs. There’s a few things that always crop up as annoying as a brand, things that make it difficult for me to get in touch with a blogger or make it difficult to decide if they fit the brief for a brand, so thought it would be a useful thing to do to post a list of the top things that should be obvious for bloggers to do that I often see as missing, let me know if you think of any more!
How I react when I see a blogging fail…
- Before you make a blog, Google your chosen name to see if someone else already has it, you’re a brand. You don’t want to have to compete with someone with the same brand/blog name, especially if it’s one that’s been long established.
- Add a search bar to your blog, makes life easier for brands and readers.
- Put your email address on your homepage in an obvious place.
- Include links to all your social media pages and make sure that they work.
- Make your name on social and blog consistent to optimise the possibility of people finding you and avoid confusion.
- Include your name somewhere on your blog so that people know who to address when they email you.
- Choose a blog/username that is easy to spell and easy to tell people (I made this mistake! And I’m not the only one)
- Remember that your homepage is valuable space, prioritise what you put there, what’s the most important things to include there?
- Not completing your social media profiles, this means people can’t find you or know what you’re about.
- Not being on Twitter, yes, it’s tricky to master, but it’s SO valuable for growing your blog and online profile. For example, is that PR friendly badge really as important as listing your social networks? I think not.
- Complaining that brands won’t work with you and then going to Twitter and acting inappropriately. Brands don’t want to work with bloggers who come across as nasty, mean or crude on social media.
- Unjustified slandering of brands on your blog or social, if you want to develop relationships with brands, remember that unless there’s a very justified reason for your negativity, this will put brands off.
- Using cliches like ‘passion for fashion’, ‘guru’ and ‘shopaholic’, be creative, when you’re browsing blog you won’t believe how many times you read these, it’s dull.
- Make yourself an email signature, it’s free and it’s quick and it means that when you do email brands they 100% know who they are talking too, cutting out any awkwardness and meaning you’ll get the most appropriate response more quickly, plus it’s another chance to link to your different online locations.
I’m not claiming to be any almighty expert (or ‘guru’) but I hope that you guys will find this interesting and hopefully helpful with it being from the point of view of someone who has been on both sides of the fence in relation to blogging.
