Hair Up Do by Marc Coates with Bumble and Bumble at Boots Press Day

Ok, so that was like the longest blog post title ever. Hopefully, this post does what it says on the tin! Ok, so yesterday I headed to the Boots Give it a Go press day with blogger chums Gemma from Flutter and Sparkle and Fei from Peonies and Lilies. Part of the event featured a pop up hair salon featuring stylists creating on trend looks using Ojon and Bumble and Bumble products.

And now is when I hand over my DSLR to rookie professional blog photographer, Gemma, who I’m pleased to say did not drop my camera. Anyway, teasing over, Gemma did an awesome job and I’ve been spoilt for choice with great photos to use. So, here’s me in the chair with hair stylist Marc Coates, who had apparently dressed to match me and was super, super lovely.

I’m not going to reveal what look we were going for until the end of the post, just to give some mystery to the whole thing (that is, if you haven’t seen my tweets already) Step one, Marc applied Bumble and Bumble Thickening Hairspray, normally this would be applied to wet hair, but in this instance Marc applied it and blow dried my hair to add volume and texture. I was really impressed with the results purely from applying this spray, a little ruffle gives hair a good lift at the roots and shape with very little effort.

To add further texture, Marc added the Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, a sea salt spray, which adds more texture, another perfect quick fix product for texture and volume and something I’ve never tried before. Marc applied this just before back combing, so this would be a great product for pre-backcombing too.

Marc then sectioned my hair and backcombed with a short bristled backcombing brush, another thing that I really should buy as it’s the quickest way to back comb and is the root of a lot of styles that I could learn to do myself. For the style we were going for, Marc back comb all but the top section of my hair to create volume and also something for the style to stick to.

For the 40s inspired hair do, Marc started the up do by twisting a section from one side of my head, around the back to create a roll. Looks complicated, but because the hair is back combed and full of product it helps it all stick together. I used to create a style similar to this when I worked in a vintage style apothecary in Leeds, so I can vouch that this is possible on yourself too.

As Marc got to the end of the roll, her loosely plaited the end around the back of my head and secured with a clear elastic. To create a 40s style roll around the back of my head.

Marc then used hair grips (just eight by the way, which I’m super impressed at!) to secure the style into place, to loop the hair roll around the back and side of my head. Here’s what it looked like from the back…

The end of the plait at the front of my head was curled around into at loop, to create the vintage style Victory Roll style. The whole look was then secured using Bumble and Bumble Does it All Styling Spray, because you can’t finish an up do without a good spritz of hair spray!
